Read on, and take a step closer to creating memorable moments.
Personally, when gearing up for a trip, my first thoughts, following passports, wallets, and phones, revolve around how to pack for enjoying the water in that specific country—be it lakes, rivers, seas, or canals. The excitement is palpable, and truthfully, I’ve made mistakes and found myself unprepared numerous times. There have been instances where I encountered a perfect fishing spot along the way, seemingly sent from heaven, but regretfully, I didn’t have a fishing rod with me. As a passionate angler, exploring new environments and discovering the underwater world to understand the types of fish that reside there is incomparable.
Traveling and fishing offer limitless possibilities, and the thrill of exploring new places, where you’re uncertain about what might bite your hook, is a unique adrenaline-fueled experience. In my pursuit to catch diverse species inhabiting our planet, I’ve faced the challenge of casting my line in every conceivable location over the last decade—whether it’s a lake, sea, ocean, island, state, city, or park. I always carry a fishing rod and basic equipment, regardless of my destination.
When it comes to fishing during a trip, essential gear includes a rod, reel, lead, hooks, and float (depending on your fishing method), emphasizing the importance of thorough research on your destination before the journey. Prior to your trip, familiarize yourself with the waters you’ll be fishing in, the types of fish present, and their habits. Doing a bit of homework before venturing into unfamiliar fishing grounds is advisable. Watching YouTube videos that show fishing in those specific locations and connecting with locals on social media who can provide firsthand advice can be immensely helpful.
Transporting a fishing pole on a plane can be a challenge, but telescopic poles or multi-part poles that can be safely packed in a suitcase are viable solutions. Other equipment like reels, nylon lines, hooks, lures, and additional gear should be packed in checked luggage to avoid any issues at the security checkpoint. Secure your belongings well to prevent damage during transportation. Once you arrive at your destination, locating a local fishing shop and seeking advice from the staff can offer valuable insights.
Preparing for fishing in a new place also involves dressing appropriately for the environment, carrying a small first aid kit, and being ready for any unexpected situations. Crafting your own bait adds an extra layer of excitement and satisfaction to the experience. However, it’s crucial to handle unfamiliar species with care, considering potential dangers such as poison. Gloves can minimize the risk of hand injuries, as they are the most exposed body part.
Respecting nature and practicing catch-and-release whenever possible contribute to sustainable fishing practices. Make sure you check fishing regulations and required permits needed for the area. Bring in only as much fish as allowed or necessary for a meal. After capturing a memorable moment with a fish, releasing it back into its habitat enhances the sense of gratitude and connection with nature.
For those accustomed to freshwater fishing in countries where saltwater fishing is predominant, it’s essential to wash your rod, fishing line, and nylon thoroughly after fishing, as saltwater can quickly deteriorate equipment.
The last thing I’ll say is this – immerse yourself in the experience, engage all your senses, and savor every moment! Moments like these will remain in your memory forever (trust me). The Global Fisherman concept integrates travel and fishing, and having fished in over 50 countries, some of my most cherished fishing memories occurred during my travels. So, dear readers, on your next journey, don’t forget to have a fishing rod in hand, dedicating an hour or two each day to truly experience something new. If you genuinely love it, don’t let excuses hinder you – connect with nature and respect it through the bond of a fishing rod. Trust me, you’ll always gain more than you expect. Tight lines, and travel safely!
